Worser Bay Race Squad Newsletter:        26 May 2005

 PRIZE GIVING THIS SUNDAY

This coming Sunday is the WBBC PRIZEGIVING.  There are heaps of prizes to be given away and not just for the series winners…!!  This year there are a number of special prizes that have not been on offer in previous years.  You never know what you might win.  So come on down and have a fun evening with your family and friends.  We would love to see all of those new Opti sailors as well as the rest of the juniors.  After prize giving the bar will be open (for your parents) and we will be ordering pizza for those who want something to eat.

Prize giving will kick off at 4.00pm following Rowies Autumn series prize giving at 3.30pm

ROWIES AUTUMN SERIES

This coming Sunday is also the last day of the Rowies Autumn series.  There are two races scheduled, starting at midday.  To date the level 3 Opti sailors have put on a great showing and we look forward to having these sailors as part of the Race Squad next season.

For all those other junior sailors, why not come down and take part in the racing prior to the WBBC prize giving.  I understand from Rowie there are lots of prizes up for grabs.

WBBC JUNIORS SELECTED TO COMPETE OVERSEAS

Three Junior Race Squad sailors from Worser Bay have been selected for national development teams to represent New Zealand in upcoming overseas regattas.

Rowan Swanson has been selected for a Yachting New Zealand team consisting of two P class sailors and three optimist sailors.  The team will be traveling to Kaio in Japan in early August 2005 to compete in an international regatta hosting ten sailing nations from around the world.  The regatta will be sailed in sea hoppers, which are similar to a small laser.

Adam Middleton and Tim Coltman have been selected by NZIODA for a New Zealand optimist development squad to compete in New Caledonia at the Noumea National Championships to be held in late October 2005.  The 12 strong development team is made up of six of the country’s top ranking 12 year olds, including Adam, and six older top ranking optimist sailors, including Tim.

As well as this Aaron Hume-Merry and Cushla Hume-Merry finished 2nd equal in the Laser and 2nd in the Laser Radial respectively, at the NZ youth trials held at Murray's Bay this year.   These placings not only qualified them for two of the three positions in the laser with the Yachting New Zealand Youth Squad but sees both Aaron and Cushla under the New Zealand Academy of Sport as carded sailors.

Well done guys and good luck with your events.

WBBC GREEN FLEET

Last season saw the development of a potentially large Worser Bay Opti green fleet for next season.

Welcome to, Arran Stagpoole, Ben Murdoch, Catlin Hearfield, Edward Jefferies, Jack McNaught, Vivian and Morgan Christie-Jones, Rebecca Daley, Rennie Pearson, Ruth Jabbs, Sam Wilcox, Ted Taylor, Thomas Hannan and Zac Blakely.  These sailors spent last season working through level 2 and level 3 sailing courses and are now set to join the WBBC Race Squad in September.

Over the winter months many of these sailors will be participating in the Titahi Bay winter series as well as getting involved in an informal winter series at WBBC.  It is fantastic to see such a big group coming through and we look forward to having you as part of the Squad next season.  Keep it up!

TITAHI BAY WINTER SERIES

A reminder to all that the Titahi Bay Boating Club winter series starts the first Sunday after Queens Birthday weekend on 12th June 2005.

For those of you who have not sailed at the Titahi Bay winter series before it is a great opportunity to improve your skills over the winter months.  There are generally no waves of any consequence and there is a dedicated Opti green fleet which would suit current level 3 sailors.  Most of Wellington’s top sailors have started their sailing career at the Titahi Bay winter series.

If you are having difficulties getting yourself and your boat out to Titahi Bay then get in touch with Terry Steven ph 939 1532 and we will see what we can organise.  There is an opportunity to store your boats at Titahi Bay Boat Club.  If you would like more information on this please contact Peter Keast ph 236 7637.

RACE SQUAD TEAM GEAR

We have now put in an application for funding to purchase team gear for the Junior Race Squad next season.  This will include a jacket (to wear before and after sailing), a polar fleece and a Tee shirt.  Thanks to all those sailors who responded to our questionnaire.  Your answers were really helpful in making the decision on what gear to get.

I will let you know how we go with our funding application but all things going well you will all have WBBC team gear to wear next season!

Parents: Could you please pass this newsletter on to the younger sailors in your family. Thanks.

That’s all for now………See you at prize giving!
