6 Dec 2003: Thanks to those who manned the jackhammers and got some of the grooves in the ramp chipped out. I wonder if the limpets will appreciate it, and keep the rest of the ramp clean?

Worser Bay Boating Club members win P Class and Starling trials
 1 Dec 2003:
The trials to select a Wellington representative for the P Class Tanner cup and for the Starling national match racing championships were held over the weekend of 29 and 30 November. The P Class trials consisted of six races held over two days on the Porirua harbour. The trials were held in a range of winds from light through to 25 knots and were organised by the Titahi Bay Boating Club. Josh Junior sailed a consistent regatta to record five wins and a second to gain the right to represent Wellington in the Tanner cup for the second year in a row. Johnathon Clough (who is a member of Evans Bay and Worser Bay) finished second in the regatta with results including a first, two seconds and three thirds. Cushla Hume Merry finished first girl and third overall with results of three seconds, two fourths and a fifth. Special mention should be made of Connor Grieve who completed his first major regatta in the P Class in what were very trying conditions. Well done Connor.

In the Starling Match racing trials were held on the Saturday in reasonably blustery conditions. A round robin was held followed by a sail off for the finals then the finals themselves. At the end of the round robin process three Worser Bay members were left in the top three spots. Aaron Hume Merry and Craig Ryburn had to sail off to decide who would meet Stu Thomas (who is a member of Evans Bay and Worser Bay) in the final. Aaron prevailed to move on to sail against Stu in the best of three races. Aaron won the first race of the finals needing only to win one more race to take out the trials. Stu had other ideas though and sailed well in the last two races to earn the right to represent Wellington at the National Starling Match Racing champs.

Good luck Stu and Josh in your respective events, and also the rest of these sailors who will be representing our club at the nationals.

Hi to Rebecca Taylor who is Treasurer of the Offshore Division of London  Corinthian Sailing Club, a friendly riverside club based on the Thames at Linden House, Upper Mall, Hammersmith. Check out their Georgian Club house!.
Rebecca is another Worser Bay export making her mark!

Your Webmaster has received this from London Corinthian , An invitation to visit next time you are in London!:

Andrew,

Thanks for getting in touch and thanks for putting the link on your site.  We too like to keep our international links, having many overseas members (including one in Christchurch).

I will forward your kind message on to the rest of the Offshore Group and arrange for a link on our site.  Any of your members would be more than welcome in our clubhouse if they are visiting London.  Tuesday night is our busiest and most social evening.  Anyone wanting to find out more about the club should be able to find what they need on the web site; if not drop me a note.

Weather Station & Web Cam
16 Nov 2003: The station and the webcam  work and pictures and data should upload every 2 hours. ( Bear with us as we get the system stabilised and reliable.) Ideally, with a broadband internet connection to the club we would upload every few minutes. Anyone know a contact who would sponsor such a thing? It would cost the club about $65/month based on normal retail offers from Xtra and Telstra.
However this is a milestone, look at:

Results for both the Open and Green fleets can be found at http://www.murraysbay.org

Twenty two Junior Race Squad optimist sailors attended the recent North Island championships. It was a huge fleet with 111 boats in the open class and 76 in the green fleet.  The Junior Race Squad was well represented with 22 boats sailing in the regatta (20 in the open fleet and 2 in the green fleet).   All sailors performed really well with many achieving personal bests and improving greatly on their performances from last year’s results and from their places in this year’s national champs. The two graphs below show a comparison between the combined totals of places for the best four sailors, five sailors and six sailors from clubs that had more than five boats entered in this year’s nationals and north island championships. They show that the Worser Bay optimist fleet is currently one of the most competitive in the country … GO WORSER BAY!

Racing Abandoned!

Sat 16 Nov 2003: Racing on Saturday afternoon proved a challenge for everyone. About 20 minutes after the start of the Mark Foy Ladder race the wind strength increased dramatically. A gust at the Club house was measured on our new weather station at 32 Knots. Almost all the fleet capsized, some many times. Congratulations to the boys on Babine for persevering after multiple capzises.   The acting PRO, Maurice Scott initiated an enhanced risk management plan to ensure everyone was always safe , albeit wet! The race was abandoned and the Coast Guard was called. All three crash boats were on the water and our Wind surfing neighbours also put their 3.5m crash boat out to help. A trailer was dispatched to Seatoun Beach to collect those blown way downwind. There were unfortunately many breakages, a mast, a boom, a rudder, a mainsail, a jib halyard. However everyone managed very well and everyone got ashore in a high state of excitement. The ramp was abuzz with good sea stories! Visitors out for a ride on the crash boat had to earn the rise helping to tow disabled boats ashore.
A debrief was held in the club when everyone had dried out to discuss what had happened and look for ways to improve the response.
Racing was abandoned for the day so Race 3 Series 2 will be sailed at a latter date.

Have-a-Go Day
Sunday 16th November 2003 09:30hrs
Public is invited to come down and have a rise in a Sunburst or kids in Optimists.

Remember the weather in recent years! Always fun and exciting for both skippers and passengers alike. We are promoting this to the public right now and going on last year we should get at least 40 people looking to have a go in a Sunburst or for kids to try out an Optimist. We need lots of helpers on hand at 9.30am to have boats rigged up ready to go at 10am, skipper boats, supervise Optimist sailing, talk to people and show them around the club - can you help? An opportunity for you to bring down a friend or family member who would like to "have a go".

Rowie Pots the Pot at Horowhenua Regatta and Worser Bay Juniors beat the Cats.
Mark Berry reports 31 Oct 2003

A small group of Opti sailors ventured up to the Horowhenua Regatta at Labour weekend from Worser Bay for the Fresh Water Champs.
One Hobby 16 sailor was most put about that an Opti sailed by Emma had beaten him up the beat after rounding the bottom mark with him.
Results were.1st Emma Berry, 2nd Sarah Berry, 3rd Simon McVeagh, 8th William McVeagh.
It should also be noted that one Sunburst also ventured up there for the championship race and came 1st. Rowan must have heard that no one else was going to turn up. The ultimate Pot Hunter.

A Weather Station at Worser Bay

13 Sept 2003: We have our weather station ( WM-918 ) ....but..... it is still in its box!
The next task is installation so that we can read wind strength and direction at the club house ..... after that we will try to utilize its computer links function to get the current weather data up on this web site. We hope it will be similar to the Kapiti Boating Club/ Kapiti Coast Guard Weather Page.  Also look at this FreeWX software  It uploads data to a web page and  captures a web cam image and uploads that too. We are working on it! The WorserCam is now working.  On the menu to the Left see WorserWeather and WorserCam. I have been able to demonstrate the cam working... uploading every 2 hours. But it needs to be set up properly. It will happen ....... sometime soon.

Limpets, seaweeds, ecology, boat ramps and Hazard Management.
Is there a connection?

WBBC Launching Ramp 31 August. Showing clear limpet grazing zones on both sides .... but not in the middle. Click for bigger picture.

31st Aug 2003: Our slippery launching ramp has been the source of much discussion over the years. People have had nasty falls because it got so slippery in the inter-tidal area. It is a Health & Safety "hazard", which under current  legislation is required to be "managed". The club has tried chemical cleaning, water and steam cleaning but the slippery seaweed returned within a few weeks.

Where ever there are colonies of limpets sheltering in rock crevices within 1.5m the ramp is absolutely clean.

Clean concrete around grazing limpets. And a new colony just starting work.

The answer is Yes: Limpets graze on the seaweeds that make our ramp slippery!

This applies to all the rocks in the vicinity too. Wherever there are good populations of limpets the rocks are clean. Limpets will travel to graze ...... but not too far from a protective crevice or "limpet groove" in the rocks or ramp. Our ramp is perfectly clean within 1500mm of the rocky east side of the ramp. Beyond that the limpets seem to find it too far to travel between tides.

The ecological balance has been shifted. There are now no limpet crevices on the 5 meter wide flat smooth ramp.

East side of ramp showing 1500mm clean zone where limpets have grazed.

Encourage more limpets? No ... but give them artificial hiding places on the ramp.  .... "limpet grooves" ... and they will travel for grazing right across the width of the ramp.

If we have more limpets the ecology of the ramp will be set at a new equilibrium. It may be possible to design a biological and ecological solution to the slippery ramp by providing more "limpet crevices" down each side and across it.

1. Piling more rocks along sides of the ramp is a start. Both on the beach and sea side there will be benefits.

2. Cut a single grove "one limpet height" and "one limpet width" (30mm x 30mm) down the centre ( or across ways ) is all that may be needed.   This will reduce the travel distance for limpets between grazing at high tide and hiding at low tide.

[ 30 mm deep x 30mm wide.]

The 1500mm travel distance either side of the "limpet groove" will make the whole ramp accessible for limpet grazing.

Black Hole: No weed on rocks in inter-tidal zone. Ramp: Clean concrete around grazing limpets on the ramp.

Worth a try?

If you saw these flags...

What do they mean?
Answer further down.

ANSWER: Flags.

Flags N over H
Abandonment further signals ashore.
Sail back to shore and wait there for further instructions. This may be flown by the crash boat if they knew that a very severe squall was about to hit or that too many boats were already in trouble. Fortunately this is a rare event at Worser Bay.

What does Code Flag C mean on the race course?

How about Code Flag S ?

Kawau Training Week
 for 15 - 19yr old sailors.
December 2003

To all WBBC Junior Regatta Sailors

Our Club has again been invited to send a team to the Kawau Training week. This is a live in course which means maximum time on the water with sailing theory at night and the opportunity to mix with crews from yacht clubs throughout New Zealand.
"Two Weeks are scheduled, the first from December 7th – 13th 2003 and the second from December 13th – 19th 2003.
The ten RNZYS Elliott 6 metre Class yachts will be used for the on water training programme. Coaching will be under the guidance of Kevin Peet, coach of the RNZYS Youth Training Programme, who will be assisted by other coaching staff and graduates from the Youth Training Programme".
The RPNYC Sailing Academy last year offered a similar, but daytime only, course here in Wellington. I would think they will do so again this year. As their course is most likely to be December13 - 19th we will try for December 7th -13th for a Kawau Island team entry. There is a good chance but no absolute guarantee that we will get the dates that we ask for.

The following guidelines are set by RNYS for the Kawau Island Training Week:

1 Youths must be between the ages of 15 and 19 years of age.
2. Crews must have a reasonable standard of competency and experience in Trailer Yachts or Keel Boats.
3 The crew must consist of a Helmsman, Mainsheet Hand and a Bowman.
4 All crews will be responsible for their travel costs to and from the Squadron Clubrooms, Auckland.
5 A fee of $330.00 (incl. GST) for each crewmember must be received with the crew list.

For those who have not had keeler or trailer yacht experience we will endeavour to arrange some familiarisation before the event.
The course cost is for each individual's care.

Those Interested
Please reply to this email by August 10 that you are interested and confirm whether, either, or which, week suits.
After that date selection of  the three team members will be undertaken by the Sailing Committee and the outcome advised to all applicants as soon as possible.

"Snapper Match Racing"
 Success in Finland

  Snapper Match Racing
16 Sept 2003
 LATEST NEWS:
Vassa, Finland.

After a great day of racing on Saturday the team ended the day with a  five win one loss record. We awoke to find very different conditions on Sunday. A steady 15 knot wind greeted us, this was the windiest we have sailed in since leaving Wellington! It also called for full wet weather gear instead of shorts and shirts.
Our first race of the day was against the locals that we have been staying with, we had a great pre-start and with our excellent boat  handling in the "windy" conditions the race was never in doubt. The next race of the day was a very similar to the first, once we won the pre-start we kept control and went on to win the race, ending the round robin with a seven win one loss record.
While we thought that this would get us straight into the finals there was an upset in one of the last round robin races which meant that there was now a three way tie for first. As we had all beaten each other the tie was unbreakable, therefore a sail off between two of the competitors was necessary.
Three names were put into a hat and the first two that were drawn out would have to race off, while the other would go straight through to the finals. Unfortunately we weren't the lucky crew to go straight through to the finals, we were set to race against the second ranked team in the regatta whom we had lost to the previous day. By this stage the wind was becoming a lot more like Wellington with regular gusts over 20 knots! The race officer then made the call to not to use spinnakers. The race started well and we kept control throughout the pre-start and came off the line in front, unfortunately the wind became too strong and half way up the second beat the race officer abandoned all racing for the day.

This left a three way tie for first place, needless to say the whole team was thrilled with winning our first event, even though we did had to share the glory. This regatta was a grade three event so this will give our world ranking a huge boost. We are now heading off to Helsinki for a grade two event, we will keep in touch to let you know how we get on.

Opening Day 2003

Seniors ( Skiff, Sunburst, OK, Lasers)
Juniors ( Opti, P, Starling)

13 Sept 2003: We are open for the 2003-2004 season. A strong northerly wind blew the cobwebs out of our winter hibernation. Many went swimming and some of us did not finish. But is it not great to get out on the water again?

John Brown Patron of the Coastguard, member of RPNYC and crewmember with Terry Steven on "Cotton Blossom" in earlier days, as well as ferry captain for 30 years and harbour pilot for 9 years before retirement, was an inspired choice as our official guest to declare the season open.

A Day at the Titahi Bay Winter Series
Reported by Adam Middleton
2 Sept 2003

 “Adam!  Time to get up.”
Breakfast, pack my sailing gear, load the boat, and off to Titahi Bay.  A quick stop at Pandoro to get a hot chocolate and some bread.
We arrive at
Titahi Bay and I go to get a chocolate bar and order my pie, while Dad rigs my boat.  Rich and I check the course.  These are really different to the courses at Worser Bay.  The day is sunny but cold.  The wind is patchy and less than ten knots.
The starts are hard with lots of boats.  After the start I feel free.  All the boats head off in their different directions.  Getting to the top mark is difficult because the wind is stronger and my hands start to hurt.  I like going downwind, especially when the breeze is up and the water comes through the centreplate!  Sailing can be disappointing when the other boats pass you, but is usually fun and exciting.  I really enjoy finishing, especially when I beat my competition
.
After sailing, I eat my pie while Dad derigs my boat.
I don’t like going home because I know I will have to do my piano practice.

Junior Race Squad Holiday Programme:
Monday 22nd September - Wednesday 24 September, 9.00AM - 3.00PM

On the first three days of the upcoming school holidays we have planned a three day training session for Starling, P and Optimist sailors. The training session will include boat handling drills each morning focusing on tacking, gybing, starting and mark rounding. The afternoon sessions will involve a mini regatta with heaps of starts and short races. The programme will cost $30 per sailor for the three days.

To help us plan the holiday training programme we need an indication of the number of sailors who will attend. Please email or phone Richard Middleton to indicate whether or not you intend to take part. Richard's email address and phone number are ...    plumcrazy@paradise.net.nz         Phone: 971 3252

FAQ

When does it take place?

The programme begins at 9.00 AM on Monday 22 September and runs through to 3.00 PM on Wednesday 24 September. Each of the three days start with a briefing at 9.00 AM. The intention is to be on the water by 10.00 AM. Sailors will be off the water and ready to be picked up by 3.00 PM each day.

Who is doing the coaching?

Greg "Bubble" Wright is the principal coach for the three days. He will be assisted by Mark Berry on Monday and Tuesday and Dean Stanley on Wednesday. Andrew Paterson will assist with those sailors who are new to their boats during each morning session.

Do I need to bring my lunch?

Every one needs to bring their own lunch. A 30 minute lunch break will be held between morning and afternoon sessions each day. The kitchen will be open for hot water and utensils etc but you won't be able to buy any food at the club.

What happens if it is really windy?

Turn up each morning regardless of what the wind is doing. If it looks like it is going to be too windy on any of the days then a decision will be made by 10.00 AM to cancel the sailing. We won't be canceling just because it is raining!!!

Can I store my boat at Worser Bay overnight?

If you are coming from another club then you are welcome to leave your boat at Worser Bay for the two nights. Ask one of the local sailors where you can leave your boat.

What will we be doing each day?

In the morning the focus will be on a range of boat handling drills in small groups. The afternoon sessions will be split into boat handling drills and a mini regatta involving lots of starts and short races.

Can my Mum and Dad help at all?

YES!!! We need someone to stay on shore each day and look after anyone if they have to come in for any reason. Kent Pearson is available on Monday. We need at least one person to be available on the Tuesday and Wednesday. Any volunteers please give Dean Stanley a call on 972 3326.

How do I pay?

Greg will be collecting the fee from each of you on the first morning (or subsequent mornings if you are coming only for days two and/or three). The programme costs $30 per sailor for three days, $20 per sailor for two days, and $10 per sailor for one day. If you are paying by cheque then make it out to Worser Bay Boating Club.

If you have any questions at all then please don't hesitate to give Dean Stanley 972 3326 call.

Teams Racing Trophy Revived

WYA Teams Trophy Revived

Gary Wagstaff from Evans Bay Yacht and  Motor Club visited the Worser Bay Boating Club on prize giving night to officially reintroduce the Inter Club Teams Shield first presented by Nigel Blair Commodore of Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club 1933-34.

The trophy was for competition amongst all Wellington Yacht Clubs in 3 boat teams of X Class Yachts.  The Xie was a 14’ plus bowsprit, one design clinker built 4 man boat, born in the 1920’s, and regarded for many years as the blue riband class of New Zealand dinghy sailing, until it went out of favour (replaced by the Javelin) in 1970. Originally gaff-rigged, in its latter days it adopted the marconi rig and with trapezes for two of the crew was then usually sailed as a three man boat.
The trophy which depicts an early X Class, records competition over 10 season up until 1957, with EBYMBC a seven times winner and RPNYC the other three. The trophy has now passed to Worser Bay after winning this season’s inter-club teams racing competition held in Sunbursts
.
One might imagine that “teams racing” today was different to the “inter club competition” of yesterday but Penn Moore confirms that the same tactics applied then; of one boat from each club trying to “take care of” one or more of the other club’s three boats.
This tends to confirm the old adage that “there is nothing new under the sun” and it seems only fitting that the trophy should be pressed in to service again, even if the days of the magnificent Xies have gone forever.

WorserCam and Anenometer

A group of us a looking into setting up a WebCam at Worser Bay , a "WorserCam" looking out over our sailing patch. Most of the hardware is already in place. We have a suitable PC and Modem, we need a simple webcam to mount inside the window of the startbox. And we need software to capture an image every 30-60 minutes and FTP it up to this website. Anyone already done this?

The "sea state", white caps, wave height ( amplitude ), etc is a very good indicator of the sailing conditions even without objective wind speed measurements. Wind direction measurement is also not a big deal here in Wellington. It is either North-West or South, very rarely anything else. The direction should be visible from the WorserCam.

Initial Briefing for Senior Club Members on
New Zealand Optimist National Championships Regatta at Worser Bay Easter 2004

at Club House
19:00 hours Thursday 3rd July

As you will already be aware Worser Bay Boating Club has been given the honour of hosting the Optimist Nationals next Easter.
This is one of the largest regattas held in New Zealand with over 160 competitors plus families expected to turn up.
We would therefore like to invite all senior members (and other interested adults) to attend a meeting to be held on Thursday 3 July at 7.00 PM at the clubrooms where a brief outline of what is involved will be given. During the meeting we will also be seeking expression of interest from people who can:-

(a) help prepare for the regatta over the next 8 months (less Christmas/New Year holidays) to ensure that we stage a first class event that all in the club can be proud of, and/or

(b) assist during the contest (preparation, race management, onshore management, catering, general help in various fields, etc, etc) to spread the load over the 5 days of the contest

Even if you will not be around next Easter there will be something you can offer to this event. This might include a specialist skill or contacts you may have that will be particularly useful to those involved in the organisation of the event.

The presentation concerning the Optimist Nationals will conclude at 7.45 PM.

This will be then followed by discussion with those interested in the draft Junior Race Squad programme including suggested trips, training events and racing opportunities for the Opti, P and Starling fleets next season.

To gauge attendance can you please reply by email if you intend to make the meeting.Vice-Commodore

The 45 minute session from 7pm is intended to "set.the scene" for the Optimist Nationals so we really would like to see as many club senior members as possible so that everybody has an idea of what is happening and how they may be able to help once we move to the next step of getting the organisation of the event fully under way.
A 45 minute time limit for the meeting has been deliberately set so that it is not too onerous for people to attend..
We will also ensure there is some time for questions so that any ideas, concerns, you may have, or matters you are not clear on can be aired.
After 7.45pm we will move on to discuss coaching and development of our junior sailors for the 2003 - 04 season.

Web Site Statistics

6 May 2003: Our web site continues to attract a good audience. So far in 2003 we have had visitors from 57 different countries on every continent.
In all of 2002 we had 10,168 unique visitors, as at 5 May 2003 we have had 5,247 uniques for 2003. Of these about 60% only visit once. But the rest of you loyal readers come back and back and back. If we keep it up this year it means that 9,400 of you will be back again   ..... some 2,022 ( 12.85 % ) of you will be back more than 25 times in a year! That is once every week of the sailing season!
I hope we can keep you all entertained! Maybe our loyal club sponsors and supporters might find these statistics interesting enough to provide us with some content to reach this fantastic loyal audience.?
We need input!   please ! Email the Webmaster.

Chapter 2 of our Club History ..

Author Grahame Anderson advises his original intention was to make it a 70 year (1926-1996) history.
But when Heleen Visser was elected Commodore in 2001 it became a trebly significant year, because it was the club's 75th, because Heleen was the first female Commodore, but also because way back in the club's history, when the first female was accepted as a member, it was agreed to on the condition that she could not expect to be allowed access to the male-only toilets and showers!
It now is a 75 Year (1926-2001) History! Read on ...

Saturday's Racing 5 April 2003

Saturday was unusualy hectic. Two senior resails as well as a junior series meant producing 30 different race results (3 junior classes x 3 races x handicap and championship + 3 senior x 2 x handicap and championship) which then need to be uploaded to our website. A rather challenging exercise!
We had 30 Optimists (17 in the open fleet and 13 in Green Fleet) on the water for the first race - what a great sight! Anyway, series results are now available on the web at www.wbbc.wellington.net.nz. although I have just discovered that some of the individual race information (ie finishing times) from Saturday has not been uploaded. All being well I will rectify any omissions this coming weekend.

GOOD LUCK

Junior Race Squad Update
Dated 23 March 2003
from Dean Stanley

Hi all
We are really getting to the sharp end of the season - only three and a bit weeks to go until Picton!! I was impressed with how well you all knew the steps of the pre start - start phase of the Opti nationals course. I might have a similar set of questions to see how well you can work out what your priorities should be on the beats to windward.

The programme for this week is as follows.
Tuesday. 25th March 2003
4.00: Briefing
4.30: Sailing when gassed to leeward
5.00: Practice the Hebtro Trophy Demo drill
5.40: Quick fire races on the moving race track

Saturday. 29th March 2003
9.30: Briefing
10.00: Multiple starts with short races. The aim is to practice the pre start and start drill and to trial our weather programme procedures.
1.00: Two back to back races sailing on the seniors course

Sunday 30th March 2003
10.00: Checking boats for maintenance required before going to Picton. For those of you who have their maintenance up to date there will be a practice of the Hebtro Trophy Demo drill starting at 10.30.

12.00: Weather and tide briefing for Picton. The aim of this session is to go over the wind conditions that we can expect in Picton and to get a handle on what will be happening with the tides. We will also outline how we are going to run the on-the-water support aspects of the trip (i.e. towing, lunches, breakdowns, weather, etc). Bring one of your parents (or both!!) and some lunch down for this session.

See you Tuesday
Cheers Dean
