Hume-Merry Leaves for the CORK Regatta in Kingston Ontario Canada
Although the CORK = Canadian Olympic
Regatta Kingston it appears to incorporate dinghy,
keelboat, powerboats et al from August 12 to the 29th. so it seems
there might be a lot of fun as well as the serious sailing..Best
of luck Aaron.

Regatta
Muritai Yacht Club, Eastbourne
20 March 2004.
Superb sailing conditions of 12 to 20 knots for this 3 race regatta.
Worser Bay boats featured in almost all classes. There were 26
Sunbursts on the line. Peter Sutton blitzed the field taking
all 3 races. A new contender for Sunburst National Championship
honours has emerged. Look out Brett Linton and Simon Manning!
Cushla Hume Merry took the Starlings. Nigel and Harry
Lloyd were very consistent, 5th in
all three races. Launching and retrieving boats through the surf and
across the soft pebbles was a challenge. Lynette Hume- Merry
saw stars for her efforts helping retrieve. Others featuring
in prize list were Matthew Steven in 420s and Andrew
Paterson, who with Lisa Ralph, won the Taipo Shield in Chinook
Sunburst 939.
Full regatta results and prize list yet to be obtained.
Sunbursts are here
15 Feb 2004: Saturday club racing yesterday was affected by Simon Manning's "Need for Speed" After the first ladder race he was heard to comment that his green Sunburst did not seem to "go". Not surprising for a sailor just returned from his "A" Class Catamaran World Championship campaign in New Plymouth. ( see below ).
For the second race , Race 3 of Series 4, the northerly wind was definitely building. The club weather station recording more that 20knots and the barometer was falling. The PROs ( there were several! ) in the start box announced that a race was on. All but seven intrepid Sunbursters called it quits and set up with hot coffee in the club to watch the fun.
Of the seven, Vagrant ( SB1434 ) saw what was coming and considerately lowered everything into the water before the start, mast and all! Nigel and Harry could watch from the club house and the green boat was going to sit it out!
Now there were "The Six"
Wally got the "The Six" away after calling them
all back for another go. The inner distance mark seemed to be
attached to a fish .... it wandered two or three boat lengths
windward and leeward during the starting sequence. A reminder not to
use the Inner Mark a an indicator of the Line.
In the melee Nimrod (SB1209 Phil & Mike ) tried to climb into Sultry Sister
(Dean and Kate ) over her port gunnel. The start-box gallery howled with delight as Nimrod backed
away to do her 720 penalty turn before the gun went.
And a away they went. Simon Manning going upwind into the building
northerly like a train, with Nimrod on the inside track getting
there second.
No guts - No glory. "The Six" all hoisted spinnakers for the ride to wing mark. Most managed the gybe but Simon was smoking. There was a man with a Need-for -Speed! Nearly a whole leg ahead! But the gusts were getting more aggressive. The gallery shouted with disapproval as some of "The Six" doused their spinnakers.
The gallery wanted blood!
The windward leg was a real struggle the gusts were sweeping stinging pellets of white water off the crests. The start-box gallery whooped and yelled as imminent capsizes were saved by scrambling crews hanging over the chine. And then let out a satisfying "aaaah" as they finally succumbed and went for a swim.
Down wind they went again, then up to the top mark ... with even stronger gusts causing even the best to stagger. The gallery, safe and warm with the delicious brewed Cafe L'affare coffee, hooped and hola'd as the fun unfolded. Simon Novak and Tony Walker tried to do it standing up in Just Magic! (SB 1738)
Back "The Six" came for a flying down- wind finish right in front of the gallery, stage managed to perfection by the ring-in PROs!
Marguerita SB1611 was literally buried in spray. Nimrod SB1209 and Sultry Sister SB1628 tried a down wind luffing duel at 30 knots right on the line. Sultry Sister was left sprawling in Nimrod's wake!
Rob Woodward pushed hard in Marguerita ( SB1611) and she responded by bending ...whooooooh! .... that mast! ....... And Horace with the two Mikes SB1600 came in with a sickening kink in her mast.
Simon and Jane's Need for Speed in Envy (SB1781) was at least partially satisfied. The seaman ship of all "The Six" was superb. The gallery got their money's worth.
If you don't believe it ..... look at these photos. and there are lots more in the Need 4 Speed Gallery
Nimrod gets the
better finish over Sultry Sister after she tried to board her from port
at the start.

26th Jan 04: Simon Manning reports on his
preparations for the Worlds:
I spent last weekend training in New Plymouth and will be up there
again this Saturday and Sunday. Sure is a boring drive. I'm
then heading up on Tuesday night (27th) for the two weeks of the NZ
Nationals and Worlds. My preparation has been sporadic - no need to
describe what the weather has been like in Wellington over the past
few weeks. I did go to Napier for part of the New Year regatta in an
effort to get some time on the water. I have a new boat which I used
twice in Australia prior to Christmas. I had to use an old
mast over there in two very windy events. My pace was not good so it
will be interesting to see what happens when I get to use my new
mast (finally arrived from Austria). Certainly I am not where I'd
like to be in terms of preparation! In terms of favourites, Glenn
Ashby the current worlds and Australian champion is the
overwhelming favourite. Murray Philpott is the top NZer and
was 10th at the last Worlds. Terry Valder is a past NZ champ
and Mike Drummond is new into the class but has the latest gear and
has competed in Europe and the US in the past few months. I'd expect
Australians to dominate the top 10. Here's a photo of Murray Phillpt
and me (NZL230) in Taranaki last weekend:

Phil Williams welcomes new sailors to our Club ... and explains the drill.
12 Jan 2004: Hi there and welcome to the Worser Bay
Boating Club follow up....... Come sailing with us, we look
forward to your being at the club and having fun.
Well we had another brilliant day at the club, all be it a bit windy
near the end, it was one of those days where you rise to the
challenge. Got wet but full of smiles and stories...
Two of the club boats were out there on Saturday pm having a sail
about with LTS graduates sailing them. There was Liz and Ian from
last years course and from the youth course last year Kate and Jo.
Had a few capsizes and all but had a ball out there.
This coming week is anniversary weekend but sailing is still ON...
yes there is the ladder race on at about 1300 (1pm) and scratch race
after a very civilised cup a tea ( OH YES and or Coffee - sponsored
by Laffare) then off we go for another rip around/flounder around
the course.
So anyway we are full on looking forward to seeing some of you new
people at the club... come on down at about 11-30 Saturday and well
see what we can organise in the way of a ride (crewing) for you..
Hell.. don't worry about never having put up a spinnaker before its
learn by numbers and its not more than 3. ( well that's what I can
count up to anyway) If you want, you can sail a club boat ( no
spinnaker) with one of your LTS classmates When you arrive, go to
the clubhouse upstairs and put your name on the crew list on the
white board and see me (Phil Williams) or Maurice Scott (Vice
Commodore) or maybe Wal (Starter in the start box area)
Just for a bit of an idea - the Ladder race is when the race is designed to have every one finishing at the same time, so they start in a particular order. First home is the winner as they have sailed above their usual performance. The scratch race is when all start at the same time and the winner is first home.
Well any way WELCOME to the club.. We need you to come sail .. we need crews for the boats.
Have an enjoyable anniversary weekend wherever you are.... 31 January is the CLUB PICNIC.. bring the family.. we are off to Ward Island out there in the harbour.
Regards
Phil Williams

program ... World Famous on Wellington Harbour! for junior and
intermediate sailors who want to improve WAY beyond our
basic learn-to-sail programs.
Junior Race Squad
OptiNats2004
4 January 2004. Reported by Dean Stanley
Josh Junior (representing Wellington) and Rowan Swanson
(representing Manawatu Horowhenua) sailed in the Tanner cup from 28
– 30 December on Lyttelton Harbour. The Tanner cup is an
inter-provincial championship with thirteen sailors competing over
six races for the prized trophy, which has been won in the past by
sailors such as Russell Coutts and Chris Dickson. This year’s
competition was very tight and was eventually won by Thomas Olds
from South Canterbury over Riley Dean of Canterbury, followed our
very own Josh Junior.
Rowan sailed a strong regatta to finish in seventh place overall.
Both Rowan and Josh have another year in this class which augurs
well for the future.
The Tauranga Cup is the national championship for P class yachts.
This year the Tauranga Cup was competed for by 91 sailors from
throughout the country.
Worser Bay had 9 sailors in this competition (the only club with
more sailors was Kohimarama who had 12 in the regatta). The whole
team had very good first and second days with some notable
performances being Jono placing second in the invitation race and
Matthew finishing 9th in Race 3. Rowan was the most consistent of
our sailors and finished a credible 9th overall in a very strong
fleet. Cushla saved the best for last with a fourteenth in the final
race. All sailors who were attending the regatta for a second time
improved their places a great deal from last year.
Worser Bay placings in the Tauranga cup were (out of 91 sailors)...
Rowan 9
Josh 14
Arran 29
Chris 33
Benn 38
Cushla 39
Jonathon 40
Matthew 41
Jono 53

1 Jan 2004: While the young guns were at Naval Point other young sailors were up north. Deborah Paterson sailed her first race in her Starling at the RNZYS New Years Day Kawau Island Regatta in Bon Accord Harbour. She won in the very light airs and was presented a very very large tee shirt by Bill Endean, the Commodore of the Squadron on the lawn of Lidgard House in Smelter House Bay! It was a more appropriate prize than the big beer mugs almost everyone else got!
