Junior Sailing FAQs
( Frequently Asked Questions)

What is the Junior Learn to Sail process at Worser Bay?
Worser Bay has what is effectively a 5 stage "Learn-to- sail" and "Sailing Development" program for Juniors ( 8 - 13 years ) leading to a situation where young sailors can join in the regular weekend club racing and local regattas and also complete at regional and national regattas for both the fun of it and for the sport. Younger sailors use Optimists and they can progress through P Class and Starlings within the program.
Our Youth and Schools ( 14- 18 yr ) program is in Sunbursts and , though the secondary schools, 420s.

Who runs the courses?
The Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club Sailing Academy using Worser Bay Boating Club resources.

Who is it for?
Children with little or no sailing experience.
Ages 8 years to 13 years.
If you are between  13 and 18 then we suggest a Youth Learn to Sail course.
These are also run by the Royal Port Nicholson Yacht Club Sailing Academy -- Youth Learn-to-Sail
To register your interest for these courses you can email the Sailing Academy on sailing.academy@rpnyc.org.nz , state "YOUTH SUNBURST" in the subject line.

Where can I book for a Junior Learn to Sail Course?

You can book a place on-line and pay using a credit Card.

When are these courses run?
In the summer school holidays, starting late October until end of January.
Do they run in the April School Holidays?

No. At the end of January there is time for junior sailors to complete several more stages of their sailing development within the same season. Experience has shown that courses late in the season tend to have to be repeated next season because the formal lessons learned have not been reinforced with enough on-the-water experience at Optisquad.

What if the course is full?
Junior Learn to Sail Courses for the 2002/03 season are now finished.
Courses for the 2003/04 season will commence early October 2003.
To register your interest for these courses you can email the Sailing Academy on sailing.academy@rpnyc.org.nz , state "JUNIOR LEARN TO SAIL" in the subject

Is it fun?
Yes ..... it sure is!
I think I mentioned this already!
Are you listening?
And a great place to make new friends

If don't go to Optisail or Race Squad is there anything else?
Yes. There is regular junior racing at Worser Bay most Saturday Mornings.
This is in a sense the whole point of junior sailing.
To get you into the fun of regular racing at the club level.
You do not have to have done Optisail or Race Squad to participate on Club Racing.
Just come down and get on the water and join the races.

Can I use Club Boats?
Yes, If you are a member, or if you have completed a learn-to-sail course earlier in the season.
The boats do not rig themselves or put themselves away.
But there is usually someone who will help you.

Do I have to join the club?
Are you sailing regularly and enjoying the benefits of the club house and organized club racing?
If yes then you will be invited to join the club.
It is not very expensive for Juniors, and by becoming a member you become eligible to win prizes and to enter other regattas.
Only club members are eligible to apply for a storage rack for their boat at the club.

Is there a Club Almanac?
Yes. It is published annually. It contains everything you need to know and more about all aspects of our club.
Pick up an Almanac at the club house or send a stamped addressed envelop ( A5 Size) to The Secretary WBBC Po Box 15 030 and we will send you an Almanac. You will get one when you pay your subscription if you are already a member, but we always have some for prospective members too.

What about Saturday Afternoon Racing?
Saturday afternoon racing at Worser Bay is for Senior Racing.
The races are longer and designed for Sunbursts and Lasers and OK Dinghies.
We do not have enough people or resources to have both types of racing at the same time.
But there is plenty of room for juniors as crews (or even skippers ) for Sunbursts.
Keen Juniors are in great demand as crews for Sunbursts. You are just the right weight!
You will learn heaps from being a crew. Tactics, sail handling and general race craft.
Just let someone know you want to be a crew by writing your name on the white board beside the start-box on race days or talk to a senior member or place an ad on the website.

Is there coaching at Club Junior Racing?
Every associated with Junior sailing is about learning more and getting more experience.
Just getting out on the water every weekend means you are learning more.
And yes there is always coaching going on during junior racing.
Maybe not directly during races but observations and discussion about situations with rescue boat crews is always available.

What say I want to spend more time on the water?
You can race on Sundays too.
There is a WYA (Wellington Yachting Association ) Junior Series that is conducted around Wellington Habour Clubs and Kapiti Coast Clubs.  Look on the WYA WebSite for the program.

What if I still want more time on the water?
Boy! You are keen!
Yes, you can sail all winter!
A coaching  clinic and winter series is held at Titahi Bay each year.
Look out for a Notice and Registration Form on this Web Site in May.

I am at High School now and I am too big for an Optimist or a P Class or a Starling. Can I still learn to sail?
Yes.
The Royal Port Nicholson Sailing Academy offers Youth Learn-to-Sail in Sunburst dinghies at Worser Bay.
The Wellington Yachting Association has established the "Collegiate 420 Sailing Academy" during 2004. You can find out more through your school sports coordinator.

Is there a Schools Sailing Program?
Several local schools have a close relationship with Worser Bay.
And Worser Bay is keen to support any school sailing programs that compliment it own programs.
Have you checked to see if your school has a sailing team?
If it has join it! And sail with them.
If not then you could form one. Ask the Coaching Coordinator at Worser Bay for advice.
The Wellington Collegiate 420 Sailing Academy has six 420s down at Evans Bay Boating Club for the express purpose of inter-collegiate teams racing after school and weekends all year round. Ask you school sports coordinator.

What boat should I sail?
Well the choices are wide.
Currently at Worser Bay the big fleet is Sunbursts. You will need to find a mate to crew with you.
But Lasers, OK Dinghies, and various catamarans often turn up for a sail at Worser Bay.
For teenagers at school, the Wellington Intercollegiate 420 fleet at Evans Bay might be your solution.

What is the Inter-Collegiate 420 Sailing Academy?
The Academy has a fleet of six 420 class dinghies at Evans Bay Yacht and Boating Club. These are the international youth sailing development class. Increasingly schools and clubs are adopting the 420 for inter school competition.
The fleet is designed to foster inter school teams racing. It is for both girls and boys.
A team consists three boats with two sailors in each boat.
Your secondary school is expected to organize your school team(s) and the necessary coaching.
Sailing Teams Racing is organized every evening , by the Academy, with two, three boat teams competing each evening. The objective is for your school to win the local championship and be selected to compete in the NZ National Inter-Collegiate Teams Racing Championship.
By that time you will be a very good sailor indeed!
More information for your School Sports Coordinator from WYA Co-ordinator Neil Verry.

And so on ........ Sailing is a Sport for Life!
