Youth Yachting Scheme & Youth Race Squad.       Page Updated: 22-Aug-2004

Worser Bay is a keen supporter of Youth Yachting Development.

This page is to provide information on the development of a scheme for both the Club and the Wellington Region.

12 August: Lion Foundation Youth Yachting Scheme under review.

The Port Nicholson Yachting Trust has been working through a review of the scheme and has come up with some ideas of how it might reshape the scheme to more widely support youth yachting into the future. The idea is to build upon the existing scheme in order to support clubs with the coaching of youth sailors in 420s and Lasers as well as in the senior P Class years and Starling years. Before going any further it is important to seek some input from sailors and their parents as to what they think about the proposed ideas.

Power Point Presentation by Dean Stanley 11 Aug 2004.

A meeting is planned for 11 August 2004 at Port Nic at 6.00 PM. All interested sailors, parents and friends should come along and find out about the new Youth Yachting Scheme for Wellington clubs and sailors

Please find attached the minutes from the meeting at Worser Bay earlier this month. At the meeting you may recall I mentioned that the Port Nicholson Yachting Trust was working through a review of the Youth Yachting Scheme that has been running for the last couple of years. There has been a bit of progress made on this review since our meeting. The process is by no means complete but it looks as though the Youth Yachting Scheme this season, and in to the future, will take on quite a different flavour.

The idea that is being muted is for the Youth Yachting Scheme to work with clubs to support youth sailors in the p class, starling, laser, 420, and the ellliott 6 metres. The idea is that the scheme provide core coaching for youth sailors (regardless of the class they sail) in areas such as tactics, rules, strategy, sailing theory and that it help provide coaching and logistics support for youth sailors at key regattas. It is also envisaged that the scheme facilitate specialist input for youth sailors (again regardless of the class they sail) in areas such as fitness testing and programming, biomechanics analysis, nutrition testing and analysis, sail shape analysis, rig analysis, foil hydrodynamics and the pyschology of sailing.

In addition to core coaching and the facilitation of specialist input it is proposed that the scheme provide ‘week by week’ coaching for youth sailors who want to have the chance to sail in an international youth match racing regatta in Sydney pre chirstmas and/or the Line 7 and Royal NZ Yacht Squadron youth match racing regattas during February next year. It is also proposed that the scheme provide coaching support for three P class/Starling clinics pre Christmas and two Laser/420 clinics post Christmas. The Port Nicholson Yachting Trust envisions that into the futue it could also be possible to work closely with clubs on the provision of ‘week by week’ coaching. One of the aims for the 2004-5 season is to discuss this with interested clubs and try and work out how it could be achieved.

A meeting is planned for 11 August at Port Nic at 6.00 PM. All interested sailors, parents and friends should come along and find out about the new Youth Yachting Scheme for Wellington clubs and sailors.

Towards a Youth Race Squad

 10June 2004:
32 members , including 9 youth sailors and visitors from Muritai attended a  consultation meeting at the Club. There was widespread support for the initiative. Dean Stanley invited those who wanted to support or contribute to contact him. Club is keen to get something up and ready to run for the start of next season. Minutes of Meeting here
